Mental Health Case Conference MBS Items
These items are not specific to a type of Allied Health Professional discipline; Psychologists and Clinical Psychologists can use them along with some other types of Allied Health Professionals approved by Medicare.
Case conferences must be organised by a medical practitioner, and the participating provider must be invited to attend by the organising practitioner. The case conference must involve at least two other members of the multidisciplinary case conference team providing different kinds of treatment to the patient (some exceptions may apply to the ‘different kinds of treatment’ rule). The case conference of at least three people must include a medical practitioner. This information is provided with no warranty or guarantee of accuracy. A combination of face-to-face, video-conference and telephone attendance is allowed. See the item number notes on MBS online for associated notes.

National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS)
This section is current for fees that commenced on 01-07-2026 (see the NDIS for updates since).
The National Disability Insurance Scheme stipulates that the price limit includes GST if GST applies to an item. NDIS updates effective 01-07-2025 stipulate that the price limit for items is capped at 50% of the item’s regulated price limit when charged for a support. There are also specific rules for the amount of travel time that can be charged, depending on whether the participant is in an MMM1-3 area or an MMM4-5 area, and whether the claimed travel time includes a return trip. Other arrangements exist for non-labour costs (non-time costs of travel) such as road tolls; the NDIS price guide should be consulted for the particular rules for your circumstances. We recommend consulting the NDIS official information to be certain of the rules.

Traffic Accidents
NSW CTP schemes

The applicable law for motor accidents depends on the date of the incident:
- For injuries sustained on or after 1 December 2017, the Motor Accident Injuries Act 2017 (MAIA) and Motor Accident Injuries Regulation 2017 (the Regulation) apply.
- The Motor Accidents Compensation Act 1999 (MACA) applies to injuries sustained before 1 December 2017.
There are differences between these schemes that can be read about here. You will want to be sure that you consider any differences between the schemes contextual to the information provided below. Remember, the information on this page is provided in good faith without guarantee of accuracy. Contact SIRA to be sure.
There are no gazette rates of allied health practitioners, including psychologists, under the NSW CTP schemes except for the initial Allied Health Treatment Request (AHTR). Service codes do apply and are listed below. Rates should be agreed upon with the CTP insurer before treatment commences.

Unlike other jurisdictions, the Northern Territory does not have a prescribed list of charges for psychologist services. Instead, the territory operates under a privately underwritten scheme where approved insurers and self-insurers manage claims. This means the costs associated with psychological services for individuals on a workers’ compensation claim are not predetermined and do not conform to a specific pricing guide. When it comes to setting fees and invoicing, practitioners are advised to apply their own standard charges for the reasonable cost of service.

- NSW Victims Services applies GST to counselling services even if the person providing it is a psychologist.
- NSW Victims Services provides an additional payment of the Superannuation Guarantee.
- NSW Victims Services allows a minimum of 30 minutes and a maximum of 2 hours for counselling consultations. If multiple clients attend one appointment, you are to split the invoice evenly. For example, when two clients attend one hour of counselling together, you charge 30 minutes per client.
- Approved allied mental health professionals are considered Generalist Counsellors, regardless of their discipline, so long as they meet the NSW Victims Services criteria for approval to work as a Generalist Counsellor.
- NSW Victims Services incorporates its fee structure into its Operational Guidelines for Approved Counsellors. NSW Victims Services can approve psychologists as Generalist Counsellors Tier 1. After three consecutive years of tenure providing Approved Counselling Services and meeting several other criteria, they may be considered, upon application, for appointment as Generalist Counsellors Tier 2.

Financial Assistance Scheme (FAS)

The Victims of Crime Financial Assistance Scheme (FAS) of Victoria accepts applications directly; it also manages and disburses funds from Awards of Assistance issued by the Victims of Crime Assistance Tribunal (VOCAT). The FAS requires that those with a VOCAT Award of Assistance transition this to the FAS.
Since FAS became responsible for paying counselling expenses for VOCAT Awards, VOCAT updated its fees in accordance with VOCAT Guideline No. 2 of 2025 during this transition period. The adjustments by the VOCAT in force 01-01-2025 were higher than the FAS fees for counselling attendances; however, the FAS has refused to honour these fees, insisting that their own rates are the ones that must be paid. After several years of indexing, the rates are now higher than those listed in VOCAT Guideline No. 2 of 2025.
It is also noted that the maximum fee for group or family counselling is unclear, as it is not divisible by the fee for a single attendee. One possible interpretation is that the fee may decrease per participant once the number of participants exceeds the “maximum fee”, yet this should be clarified with the FAS directly.
The FAS do not appear to utilise item numbers. The FAS Counselling Expenses Payment Schedule outlines the fees for most of their psychologist items, as outlined below.
