Private health insurance extras for counselling services and psychological intervention are generally able to be claimed for your visit to a psychologist.

Most private health insurers generally have policies that stipulate that this is only able to be claimed if it is otherwise being solely paid by the insured individual.

For example, you cannot generally claim a Medicare rebate through a Mental Health Care Plan then also claim the gap payment through the private health insurer. It is one or the other that you can use to rebate the session.

This would be claimed against the extras coverage that many private health insurers provide.

It is not claimable through private health insurance hospital cover that is for the purposes of covering hospital admissions and the like.

This article is based on general information your individual private health insurer may have policies and procedures that differ to the information here. It is best to check with your private health insurer directly.
